[ARCHIVED] Severe Weather Awareness Week is March 14-18; Tornado Drill March 15

The annual Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kansas will be March 14-18. This year's tornado safety drill has been moved to an evening time - 6:30 p.m. on March 15.
The change in the tornado drill will allow families to practice their emergency plans at home. Fred Simon, Kingman County Emergency Manager, said sirens across the county will sound for the drill unless there is severe weather in the area.
A helpful trick to remember this time of year is DUCK: Down to the lowest level, Under something sturdy, Cover your head and Keep in the shelter until the storm has passed.
Kansas had 126 reported tornadoes in 2015 but those were spread across 229 days.
"This shows that we must always be aware and prepared," Simon said. "Having a severe weather plan and a disaster kit is a good place to start."
